Galileo School

Postby JimW » October 12th, 2009, 5:49 am

Have a request from Galileo School of Math and Science. I have called Eric and left a message. I know it won't be dark this early but would still be good to get a few scopes out to at least play show-n-tell until closer to 7 for which we might get Jupiter. Smile

Will post more details when I hear back from Eric.

Short notice...this is for next Monday.

Thank you.

Hi Jim.

Chris Nigro, science teacher from Galileo School of Math and Science, gave me your information. He mentioned that your group may be available for a Community Event that we are setting up for Monday October 19th. We will be starting at 6pm and ending at 7:30. We are looking for some telescopes to be set up outside of the school for parents and students to view the night sky. I can fill you in more about the event, if you are interested/able to help us.

Please give me a call.

Heard back from Eric.

7th graders. There are about 250 kids. Not sure how many will show up.

The are having a module rotation type of curriculum for which we'll be a part of that.

Sunset is 18:15 so we would start at 18:30. Told Eric we could be there at 18:00 for at least equp show-n-tell and setup time.

Moon sets at 18:50. It will be a 3% waxing crescent. We'll still have Jupiter as well.

Learned too that all the 7th graders are given iPod Touch's as part of their school supplies and are learning about the space-related apps that are available. (BobV ... ) :)

Their event is scheduled to end at 19:30 but it looks like we'll be able to stay longer if we wish for those kids that want to hang out a bit afterwards. Play this one by ear.

The event turned out pretty well.

The school seemed quite pleased that we were able to participate in their event.

We had at least 100 folks (I think more) come thru.

We were setup as one of the "stations" that the 7th graders worked thru. They were there with their teachers, some parents and siblings.

Started out with Jupiter just as the sun set. Seeing started out quite nice. As the sky became darker we started hitting some of the other popular objects. Bruce I believe got to the Ring Nebula, M13 and Andromeda for folks.

Cindi had Jupiter and I think she hit a globular or two as well.

JimU had M13 for a bit as well as Jupiter. (Ok, we all had Jupiter. :) )

I had Jupiter, Alberio, and Mizar.

Vicky manned our table with our give-a-ways. We had donated magazines from Stargate Astronomy (Thank you Erikk!!) to hand out along with the NASA solar information.

The school is definitely interested in having us back for future events.

Thank you to Cindi, Bruce, JimU and Vicky for helping out.
