PPCC star party Thursday, Sep. 24...

Postby astroyutz » September 22nd, 2009, 4:06 am

Hi, gang!

A private star party is scheduled for THIS Thursday evening (Sep. 24) at the
Rampart Campus of Pikes Peak Community College (Highway 83 & Powers).
The text from the club's calendar for this event is included below.

I plan to be there and Kelsey will join me if her school work permits.

Who else will join the fun? Bud Murch anticipates a large turnout (100+
students).

Be sure to get there early enough to take a tour of the recently re-located PPCC observatory.

They have added a nice wide sidewalk (from the parking lot to the observatory), so that might be a nice place to set up.

Forecast for Thursday is 20% chance of precipitation and cloudy - but you can still see the observatory, and talk about astronomy with the students.

See you there!

Hi Jim R,
Is there room for 1 more? I'm not great at finding much yet, but I can certainly find Jupiter and the moon <LOL>

And I would love to tour the observatory! How much earlier are you talking? 6pm? 6:30?

Hi, Cindi!

> Is there room for 1 more?

Certainly! We would appreciate your help.

The students may barrage you with questions, but if you let them know that
you are fairly new to the hobby I'm sure they will understand.

Indeed, if the weather cooperates, those will be showpiece objects for the
evening. Perhaps one of the club members (maybe even yours truly) could
show you a new object or two as well.

I'm not sure there's an official start time to the "tour". My guess is that if
you show up soon after 6:00 PM there will be plenty of time to look around
the observatory.

See you there, weather permitting.

I assume we're setting up in the field again?

Bruce, if so, yes...plenty of room...and if anywhere near the turnout from last time (even with the bad weather)...the more scopes the better!

Hi, Jim!

> I assume we're setting up in the field again?

Yes. From what I have been told, the vicinity of the field to the east of the
PPCC main building where we have held this event several times now hosts
the school's observatory sporting a 12" SCT. We will set up along a sidewalk
that leads to the observatory and in the field surrounding it.

Of course, this is all predicated by the weather. Stay tuned...

The forecast seems to be improving as the day goes on. I'm hopeful.

The weather is playing with us. Clouds then clear, then clouds again. We're sitting on the backside of a low pressure system setting down in Oklahoma.

We may get lucky and these clouds may dissipate as the temperature drops after sunset. Only one way to find out!

See you there!
SUNSET=18:55hr
(Look at it this way; It will be good practice for Friday's Public SP - that one should have nice weather.)

PPCC star party Thursday, Sep. 24...

Postby JimW » September 24th, 2009, 12:59 pm

Am sitting here in the parking lot. Storm just passed. Clearing nicely so far.

The observatory looks reall small in the field next to the campus. :-)
