NexStar Software Quirks: More Reasons I Prefer Linux

Postby Nyarlathotep » September 5th, 2010, 8:36 am

I couldn't get the motor and hand control update software working properly in Windows Vista yesterday. Interestingly, it worked just fine in XP running within Virtualbox in Ubuntu Lucid (my preferred OS). XP set my TrendNet Serial-USB adapter to COM3; it didn't matter which COM port I tried in Vista.

In Ubuntu Lucid, Stellarium controls my NexStar 4SE without any issues, so I see no reason to purchase NexRemote (which I tried and had to install in compatibility mode).

Also on the subject of Linux, after I got the second release of Froyo for my Motorola Droid today, I noticed that the app "GPS Status" had been updated, and that it found my coordinates and altitude within a couple of seconds. GPS Status also includes a compass (true north and magnetic) and a leveling tool, which are perfect for setting up a telescope mount.
